Trophic interaction between copepods and ciliates: effects of prey swimming behavior on predation risk

چکیده
The transfer of matter and energy in planktonic food webs is determined by the encounter rate between predators and prey and subsequent attack and capture success. We tested if differences in swimming behavior and escape ability of 2 planktonic ciliates could explain differences in their susceptibility to predation from the calanoid copepod Acartia clausi. We chose 2 similarly sized ciliates, which exhibited very different swimming behavior: Strobilidium spiralis (Strobilidiina) and Metacylis sp. (Tintinnina). Behavioral analyses were combined with feeding incubations. The behavior of S. spiralis was characterized by slow upward and downward swimming interrupted by sudden jumps. Metacylis sp. showed a swimming pattern typical for many tintinnids, with steep helical trajectories and without jumps. Feeding experiments while A. clausi was incubated in a 1:1 mixture of both ciliate species showed a higher predation rate on Metacylis sp. According to behavioral observations, the copepod exhibited a 2-fold difference in ingestion rate between the ciliate species. Furthermore, film analyses revealed that S. spiralis escaped the attacking predator with rapid jumps while Metacylis sp. lacked any effective behavioral response to the approaching predator. We discuss the relative importance of velocities and dispersal rates in encounter processes and conclude that the escape response shown by S. spiralis significantly reduces the risk of predation. This study emphasizes the importance of mechanistic knowledge at the level of behavior and individual sensory abilities to improve present models of biogeochemical fluxes in the water column.

Effects of microzooplankton and mixotrophy in an experimental planktonic food web
Microzooplankton have received increased attention as an important trophic link between the microbial loop and calanoid copepods. On the basis of food size spectra overlap in some microzooplankton groups and calanoid copepods, however, such microzooplankton could function as competitors rather than as food for calanoid copepods (intraguild prey). Mixotrophic flagellates presumably represent a l...

To examine the grazing effects of copepod-dominated mesozooplankton on heterotrophic microbial communities, four mesocosm experiments using gradients of zooplankton abundance were carried out at a coastal marine site. The responses of different protist groups (nanoflagellates, ciliates) and bacterioplankton in terms of abundance and additionally, for bacteria, diversity, production, and exoenzy...

The effect of foraging behavior on predation risk was studied by exposing the two small Calanoid copepods Acartia clausi and Acartia tonsa to 0 or 1 ppm (1,500 cells ml-l) of the diatom Thalassiosira weissfogii and to presence of the predator Pureuchaeta norvegica. In filtered water, predation rate was the same on the two species. In algal suspension, predation rate on A. clausi was half that i...

Predation on rotifers by the small suspension-feeding Calanoid copepod Diaptomus pallidus was examined in order to quantify the effects of prey density, prey type, and the presence of algal food resources on ingestion rates, and to determine whether ingested rotifer biomass could be utilized to enhance the survival and reproduction of the copepods. Clearance and ingestion rates of D. pallidus o...
